EVD 80: Mission Accomplished – Evergreen Speedway – Event Coverage

EVD 80 "Mission Accomplished" was held on August 26, 2012 at Evergreen Speedway in Monroe, Washington. Stakes were high at this event since this was the last round of the EVD local drift competition for 2012. Surprisingly, the tension amongst drivers seemed to be minimal. All of the competitors were out on the track squeezing in every minute of seat time possible for one reason – they love the sport.

Each driver gave it their all every run. Several unfortunate incidents occurred included Nikki San Miguel waxing the 3/8ths wall in qualifying and Kory Keezer's wheel destruction at the end of the competition. As Grassroots drivers finished their last rounds the tire smoke clouds grew twice as big. Joey Portelli, the team organizer for the Canadian team Midnighters took the top spot in Grassroots. Their team has had quite a bit of success this season. Marc-Andre Tatto showed everyone earlier this season just how determined he was and at EVD 80 him and Gaelen Norman (Big Boy Media) went to town on the 3/8ths. Another Grassroots driver that I feel everyone should keep an eye on is Chris Goldie-Wells (Boss Innovations). All of the Grassroots drivers have their own unique driving style and I'm excited to see them all progress next year.

The Pro-Am competition was intense as usual. The last few battles were close but as always it came down to a top three. Nik Jimenez took first with Kory Keezer in second and Matt Vankirk in third. I'm excited to see what the Pro-Am line-up is going to bring next season. Evergreen has mentioned the new owner for the track has decided to continue to push the EVD program throughout the year which means more fall/winter practice days. This should mean that each of the drivers will have a chance to practice more before they return to the competition in 2013.

After the award ceremonies there was a Q&A session held with the four drivers who received their Formula Drift licenses. These drivers were: Rob Primo, Jeremy Richter, Nik Jimenez, and Victor Moore. First off, Rob Primo mentioned that the team is happy with the current car but their is a slight possibility of swapping the 2JZ-GTE into a Lexus chassis. Overall, Primo seemed very happy with his current group of sponsors and with how much they have taken care of him so far. Jeremy Richter mentioned that they are in the market for a new car. Richter also mentioned that earlier this season his team's skills were put to the test handling several rod knock issues in multiple engine builds. Nik Jimenez is looking to surprise everyone with his decision for his car for next year. Let's just say I have yet to see such a big smile on his face all season so I think he's got some pretty exciting plans. Last but not least, Victor Moore was ecstatic with getting his license and mentioned that he is quite pleased with his main support (Maaco) but he remained quiet on any plans for the car. It was great to see these guys who have worked so hard for years finally getting their licenses.

Congratulations to all drivers on another successful season for the Pacific Northwest. Everyone at ImportMeet.com is excited for everyone who is moving up to the Formula Drift circuit and can't wait to see each of their careers progress. For all other drivers we are excited to see you next season! For more information on future drift events please visit the website for Evergreen Drift.

Matt created ImportMeet.com in 2011 after noticing a lack of media websites dedicated exclusively to import cars. Although he's employed as an engineer and has no formal training in journalism, his skills continue to develop as the editor for the site. He enjoys writing feature car articles, technical build/project articles, and organizing events. Matt drives a 2023 Honda Civic Type R and a 1990 LS-swapped Mazda RX-7.
