Scion FR-S Concept (FT-86) – Photos and Video

Although I'm a little late, I thought I would write a post about Scion's new FR-S (FT-86) concept car that is soon to be a production model.  What started as a collaboration between Toyota and Subaru has turned into the work of art you see in front of you.  There have been many iterations of this concept car with the latest being the closest to production.  Details from the Scion press release state that the FR-S stands for Front-engine, Rear-wheel drive, Sport.  The car was inspired by the AE86 Corolla in the sense that the goal for the FR-S was to be a lightweight and well balanced sports car.

The powertrain consists of a 2.0L boxer engine with Toyota's D4-S direct and port fuel injection system and a six-speed manual or automatic transmission.  The D4-S allows for better NA performance while still maintaining good fuel economy.  Actual horsepower numbers for the FR-S haven't been released yet, but I would expect at least 200 HP to be under the hood.  Also no news as to whether they will have a turbocharged model or not, but speculation across the internet is that there may be a model that takes advantage of a turbocharger.  Exciting news is that the base model will have a limited-slip differential which is nearly a requirement on most modern RWD sports cars.

Scion says that the profile (see in the gallery below) is inspired by the 2000GT and maintains a very low hood line thanks to the boxer engine.  Although the images below are all final renderings, you can get an idea of what the production car will look like.  I highly doubt that the large wheels and small mirrors will make it to production, but most of the LED lamps will probably be in the production model.  I would also be surprised if the integrated rear diffuser is part of the production model, but it would definitely make for a very aggressive rear end.  Check out the video below from FT86club.com which is from the actual unveiling at the NY Auto Show this year.

Matt created ImportMeet.com in 2011 after noticing a lack of media websites dedicated exclusively to import cars. Although he's employed as an engineer and has no formal training in journalism, his skills continue to develop as the editor for the site. He enjoys writing feature car articles, technical build/project articles, and organizing events. Matt drives a 2023 Honda Civic Type R and a 1990 LS-swapped Mazda RX-7.

Sign me up for one.. or at least a test drive! I was telling my sister’s boyfriend about this and his response was “I just can’t get excited for a Scion.” But I was giving him all the info on it and finally showed him the pics and he thought it looked awesome! lol

Yea. The styling is pretty amazing. I really hope they release the powertrain options soon so we can get even more excited… 😉
