Formula Drift is hands down the largest automotive spectator event in the Seattle area. It pulls in thousands of people from all over Washington, Oregon, Canada, Idaho, and even further away. For many living in the northern states this is the only event in the series that is within driving distance. The next closest FD events are Long Beach & Irwindale, both in Southern California.

fd-round-5-2013-pt-1-article-01This year it appeared that the Fatlace Slammed Society car show was about 50% larger than last year. Most of the cars in the show were local but there were quite a few that came from far enough away that I hadn’t already seen them at other events.

fd-round-5-2013-pt-1-article-02 fd-round-5-2013-pt-1-article-03This Rocket Bunny kitted FR-S with blue Volk Racing TE37’s came from Northern California to compete in the car show.

Felix brought his always impressive Honda Fit from BC.

fd-round-5-2013-pt-1-article-04Walking through the pits and checking out the professional drift cars was a show in itself. It was easy to lose track of time admiring the engineering and detail that goes into each of the professional race cars.

fd-round-5-2013-pt-1-article-05Something that isn’t seen often at drifting events is a GS300 drift car. LSX swapped GS300’s are even rarer.

fd-round-5-2013-pt-1-article-06 fd-round-5-2013-pt-1-article-07This GS sponsored by Serial Nine came from Canada to compete in the professional competition. Unfortunately it didn’t make the top 32, but it was great to see a unique chassis on track.
I took a few extra minutes inspecting Joon Maeng’s 240SX. The build quality of his car was top notch.

fd-round-5-2013-pt-1-article-08 fd-round-5-2013-pt-1-article-09I also spent a good amount of my time in the pits checking out Ryan Tuerck’s PSI built Scion FR-S. The 2JZ-GTE stuffed into the engine bay was even more impressive in person.

fd-round-5-2013-pt-1-article-10 fd-round-5-2013-pt-1-article-11I wasn’t alone checking out the car. A large crowd surrounded Tuerck’s car for both days. Our full drifting coverage of Formula Drift Round 5 will be posted early next week!

Matt created ImportMeet.com in 2011 after noticing a lack of media websites dedicated exclusively to import cars. Although he's employed as an engineer and has no formal training in journalism, his skills continue to develop as the editor for the site. He enjoys writing feature car articles, technical build/project articles, and organizing events. Matt drives a 2023 Honda Civic Type R and a 1990 LS-swapped Mazda RX-7.

I thought it was pretty awesome seeing Joon Maeng talkin with a bunch of kids and even letting them get strapped into the driver seat of his car for pictures
